Reports coming in say 17 Lagos-bound passengers have burnt to death in an accident that occurred along the Abuja-Lokoja highway in the early hours of Tuesday.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) who arrived at the scene have reportedly taken four surviving passengers to Abaji General Hospital for treatment.

The officials were also seen trying to put out the fire and corpses.

An eyewitness, Kabiru Garba, told Daily trust that the accident involving an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GME 20 XA and a Daf trailer with registration number BAU 632 XA collided around near Yaba junction, along Abuja-Lokoja highway.

He said the 18-seater bus which was coming from the Abuja-Gwagwalada axis on speed when it hit the trailer from behind and went up in flames.

Officials were also seen diverting traffic to a single lane for motorists travelling towards the eastern part of the country.

FCT sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Samuel Ogar Ochi, has confirmed the accident, attributing it to speeding by the bus driver and poor visibility.

He said the agency would collaborate with security agencies and environmental officials to see how a mass burial will be carried out since the corpses were burnt beyond recognition.

Ochi, however, cautioned motorists especially night travellers against overspeeding especially at the peak of the dry season, which he said always resulted in poor weather and make visibility poor for motorists.
