Journalists participating in the capacity-building workshop on conflict and sensitive reporting and the 2022 general elections in Kano State have sought security for newsmen in the course of the elections and beyond.

The request was made in a communique signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Drafting Committee, Abubakar A. Dangambo and Hadiza Muhammad respectively and issued at the end of the one-day workshop held at Ten To Ten Restaurant in Kano on Wednesday.

The participants of the workshop who were drawn from different organisations including the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), among others decided to work closely with stakeholders to ensure the 2023 elections are free, fair, and credible.

The media personalities also requested the continuous training of their contemporaries to ensure practical coverage of political activities in the country including elections.

In the communique, the media officials were also advised to avoid reporting sensitive headlines and fake breaking news while reporting the election process.

“The professionals then advised fellow journalists to distance themselves from dangerous situations and occurrences during campaigns and elections, so as to be safe and alive to write their stories,” it read.

The pressmen were also implored to make themselves familiar with the current happenings in Nigeria and the world atlarge in a bid to enhance their professionalism.
