Labour Party Vice Presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has been accused of assaulting the country's democracy and threatening President Muhammadu Buhari.

The accusation was made by the Northern Leadership of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in a statement on Friday.

Baba-Ahmed has been under heavy fire lately for his recent comments on the 2023 elections and the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

Condemning his utterances and distancing itself from what it referred to as threats, IPAC stated that silence on the part of Peter Obi is an indication of his endorsement.

“We have narrated the details of Baba-Ahmed’s open and direct threats to democracy and the corporate existence of Nigeria for the purpose of alerting the relevant security agencies, and international stakeholders to the potential danger our country is facing.

“We note that since Baba-Ahmed openly assaulted Nigeria’s democracy, maligned and threatened the President, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and the INEC Chairman, neither his principal, Mr Obi nor his party, the Labour Party, has come out to condemn him.

“We believe, therefore, that the threats and incitements made by Baba-Ahmed represent the position of Mr Obi and the Labour Party.

“We of the northern leadership of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, wish to dissociate ourselves from the current moves by Baba-Ahmed and his co-anarchists to endanger the civil rule.

“We are raising an alarm over these threats to a peaceful transition of power.

“We are disturbed by the potential uprising against Nigeria’s democracy. What is at play sounds familiar.

“The leadership of the Labour Party is operating from the playbook of the military under Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida.

“We recall with trepidation the harrowing experiences of Nigerians following the manner the democratic process was truncated in 1993 when a presidential electoral process was permanently halted and the duly elected candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Moshood Kasimawo Abiola was prevented from assuming office”, the statement reads.
