2027 presidency: Only God can tell who will run for election – Peter Obi asserts

It is up to God to decide who will contest for election in 2027, according to Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the general election of 2023.

Obi stated this while pressing wealthy Nigerians to contribute more to the underprivileged in the community by providing water and education.

Speaking on Wednesday at a press conference in Abuja, Obi maintained that 70 per cent of Nigeria's wealth is held by just 1% of the country's population.

He also pointed out that the situation would not be as dire if 1% of the population, or roughly 200,000 wealthy Nigerians, would allocate their resources to meet the basic needs of the impoverished in our community.

He also tasked all levels of government with making sure that the distribution of resources is directed towards raising the standard of living and rescuing the impoverished among Nigerians.

The ex-LP flag bearer stated that his appeal in these two areas—water and education—comes from what he learned while on a humanitarian journey across the nation, which made him aware of the depth of poverty and human desertion.

To provide the impoverished with a temporary water supply, Obi announced the completion of the building of 10 boreholes in many Northern states, saying if 200,000 wealthy Nigerians joined him in doing the same in the region of their choice, it would significantly contribute to solving the water needs of poor Nigerians.

Similar to this, Obi stated that he was brought to tears by the potential he saw when interacting with almajiris at the Quranic schools in the North.

These youngsters are very bright, but they require proper assistance to develop into development catalysts, Peter Obi noted.

“I am carrying out a campaign to make the rich in our midst do more in providing water to our rural poor and helping to pull the out-of-school children off the streets for proper development.

“This is the time to cut waste, our larger population can’t be suffering conspicuous lack of basic needs like water and we live lavish lifestyles in their midst, our crisis of insecurity and other challenges derives from poverty and it’s our responsibility to pull people out of poverty through good education.”

In response to his criticism of coastal roads, the ex-LP presidential candidate stated that, if elected, he would not approve any new roads until all the nation's current road projects are completed.

“I cannot embark on a new road when we can’t connect our states and cities in all the geopolitical zones because of bad roads. I will first fix the roads and move the economy.”

In 2027, Obi stated that his current worry is how to see Nigeria work, not who can run for election in the future. "Only God can tell who can run for election in the future, my interest now is the poor and how to see Nigeria work."
