At least 94 people have been killed in landslides that tore through a mountainous region of Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state.
Aljazeera said on Thursday, that the disaster in the city followed three hours of torrential rain.
Rio de Janeiro Governor, Claudio Castro said the number of the dead could rise as searchers pick through the wreckage.
Castro added in a statement; “The situation is almost like a war. Cars hanging from poles, cars overturned, lots of mud and water still."
Also, videos posted on social media showed cars and houses being carried away by the landslides.
The Globo television network showed houses buried beneath the mud in areas firefighters had not yet been able to access.
The state fire department said more than 180 soldiers had been deployed while civilians have also joined in the official recovery efforts.
