The alleged mass sack of workers at Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma on Tuesday has been questioned by Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, who detached himself from the letters issued to the workers.
Obaseki in a statement issued by his special adviser on media, Crusoe Osagie, denied the Governor's involvement with the letters.
The interim management of the university had reportedly sacked no less than 90 members of staff (20 academic and 70 non-academic) in the name of "repositioning the university".
“In repositioning the University, the Management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, writes to convey to you the decision of the Special Intervention Team ( S.I.T) of your disengagement from the services of the University with effect from March 10, 2023," one of the letters signed by the Acting Registrar, Ambrose Odiase, read.
The Governor has however order an investigation of the development, pledging that swift action would be taken on anyone found guilty.
He declared the letters illegal, null and void, reiterating his administration's interest in the welfare of the university workers.
Obaseki further vowed to ensure that the state remaois conducive for living and working.
The staff of the university had staged protests in February, alleging the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Sonnie Adagbonyin of selective salary payment, maladministration, intimidation, and victimisation in the University.
