Students from the University of Zululand were robbed at gunpoint by men who stormed their off-campus residences and took cell phones, laptops, clothes and money on Tuesday night.

An ambulance was called after a student had difficulty breathing as a result of the robbery's shock.

According to sources, gunshots were fired, but no one was hurt.

The alleged incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. when students were returning from campus.

Students attempted to close the doors and prevent the robbers from entering, but they pushed the doors open and took whatever they could find.

According to a university source, the KwaDlangezwa community has been subjected to the most heinous forms of brutality by criminals over the years.

Armed criminals attacked student rental flats, causing trauma and fear among students.

He claimed that some students were assaulted because they were hesitant to hand over their belongings.

“The criminals are emboldened by the fact that the nearest police station is kilometres away and there is no visible police presence in the area.

This gives them the certainty they can do whatever they want, and the chances of them being caught are close to none,” the source said.

Student Representative Council president Siyemukela “Yaya” Khumalo stated on Wednesday that after receiving a lot of calls from students, he went to one of the university-accredited off-campus accommodations, Dwalalabahle, on Tuesday night.

Khumalo confirmed that students' belongings had been stolen, including laptops and phones.

"We want the landlord to pay for everything that was taken from the students," Khumalo said.

Khumalo stated that they will meet with the university administration to advocate for student relocation.

They will also consult with the institution about the safety and security of those who live in off-campus housing.

Students staged a protest in 2022 and asked the university to respond with information on how they would deal with the issue of student safety.

As a result, the academic program was suspended by UniZulu management after a mob threatened to set university property on fire.
