Workers under the aegis of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) on Thursday embarked on a warning strike.

The PASAN members shut the House of Assembly gate and demanded that the state government immediately implement the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS).

Ayotunde Ojediran, the PASAN chairman, told journalists outside the assembly's entrance in Abeokuta that it was necessary for the workers to express their unhappiness with the present administration.

Ojediran indicated that the union has begun a three-day warning strike in response to the state government's failure to accept their demands.

He stated that the application of the CONLESS to staffers in the state assembly and House of Assembly Service Commission would put them on the same level as the state judiciary.

According to him, the staff of the state judiciary are already benefiting from the Consolidated Judicial Salary Structure (CONJESS).

The Ogun State PASAN chairman also stated that the administration was yet to comply with Sections 10(2), 13 and 14 of the State Assembly Service Commission Law, 2018, as well as the Statutory Offices (State Emoluments) Amendment Law, 2018.

He pointed out that non-compliance had resulted in the nonpayment of proper salary and allowances to the assembly's three most senior officers since their respective dates of appointment.

”The union had earlier written a letter to the state government stating all the demands and we issued a 21-day ultimatum to meet the demands but nothing was done till the ultimatum lasted.

”We are presently in negotiation with the state government but as we speak we are yet to reach any meaningful agreement.

”If there is no positive response coming from the state government, we will call for an indefinite strike immediately,” he said.

All efforts to reach the assembly’s management at the time of filling this report proved abortive.
