The leadership of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU)  and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have confirmed that the Federal Government is yet to communicate with them since the announcement of a two-day solidarity protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

AllNews Nigeria reports that the NLC had announced a two-day protest on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 26 and 27, 2022, in solidarity with members of the striking university-based unions over the prolonged strike.

ASUU and SSANU also confirmed that they await an official contact from the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu after the order by President Muhammadu Buhari to find a solution to the lingering strike.

Senator Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, had urged the NLC to reconsider its plans to protest after a report against the act from the Department of State Services (DSS).

Punch reports that speaking with the National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, on Sunday, the boss said the government was yet to communicate with the union, rather the former had only tagged the planned protest "illegal".

“We have not heard anything from the FG and no formal invitation from them. All they have been saying was that the planned protest is illegal. They don’t want to do what they are supposed to do,” he said.

When asked about meeting with the government in a different interview after the directive by President Buhari, Osodeke said “We spoke and it was agreed that we would meet, but we are still awaiting official communication as regards that.”

The National President of SSANU, Ibrahim Mohammed, said the union was yet to receive any call from the government, noting that the planned protest is only a means to express their grievances.

“I have not been contacted and my union has not been contacted, as I speak to you we are still expectant that they will speak to us but the protest will still go on.

“The protest is an expression of our feelings on how we are being treated. Today is the 128th day of our strike. All universities have been shut down, but their children are in private schools and abroad. So, what do you expect from them?”

Ministry of Education’s spokesperson, Ben Goong, when reached said, “There is a presidential directive and that will be followed to the letter.”

ASUU, SSANU, NASU and other tertiary institution-based unions are on strike over unresolved issues with the Federal Government, including the renegotiation of agreements made with the different unions by the government.
