A dire situation unfolds in northeastern Australia as extreme floods prompt the evacuation of hundreds of residents, with military helicopters deployed for rescue operations.

The state of Queensland is grappling with rising waters that have cut off towns, including the popular tourist destination Cairns, raising concerns about access to clean drinking water and overall safety.

Amidst the severe flooding, over 300 people were rescued overnight in Queensland.

Military helicopters played a crucial role in reaching areas isolated by the floods. The evacuation efforts highlight the urgency of the situation, with residents forced to seek refuge on rooftops to escape the rising waters.

Cairns Airport has also been significantly affected, leading to the cancellation and postponement of all flights.

More than 14,000 properties in the region are without power, compounding the challenges faced by residents.

The floods have led to unusual sightings of crocodiles swimming in floodwaters in several rural areas, including Wujal Wujal and Ingham.

This adds an additional layer of concern for the safety of residents and underscores the gravity of the unfolding natural disaster.

The flooding is a consequence of heavy rains and strong winds brought by Tropical Cyclone Jasper, which made landfall in Australia the previous week.
