No fewer than five mobile policemen and three civilians were shot dead in a bandits' attack on Gatikawa community in Kankara local government area of Katsina State.
According to reports, the attack took place on Wednesday evening.
The mobile policemen were on special duty from Kano when the bandits invaded the community.
Their presence was only noticed by the sounds of their weapons as they shot sporadically on motorcycles into the community.
Sources revealed that the bandits were over 300 when they invaded the community.
A resident who pleaded anonymity said the bandits went from house to house in search of money, food items and other valuables.
The source revealed that several people were injured while trying to escape the attack.
The attack has mandated some residents to take cover in other neighbouring communities over fear of renewed attack.
Bandits had killed a senior police officer in Dutsinma local government area, as well as an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Aminu Umar alongside several civilians.
The spokesperson of the Katsina State Police Command, SP Gambo Isah confirmed the incident in a text message.
“True, five Policemen from Kano on special duty at Kankara and three villagers of Gatakawa, were killed," he said.
In another development, the Katsina State Police Commissioner, CP Idrisu Dabban Dauda said the police is committed to the welfare of its men while presenting N14.6 million cheques to families and next of kin of slain officers on duty.
He said he was presenting the cheques on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba.
This was disclosed in a statement by the spokesperson of the command, SP Gambo Isah.
The statement read that the gesture was part of the IGP's family Welfare Insurance Scheme to specially cater for the families of deceased officers on duty.
