According to reports, bandits raided Zurak village in Bashar District of Plateau State's Wase Local Government Area, murdering around 40 people, including vigilantes.

Daily Trust noted that the event occurred at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, when individuals were going about their daily routines, citing neighbourhood residents.

Inhabitants of the hamlet stated that they were unable to quickly report the occurrence owing to the area's inadequate communication network.

Sahpi'i Sambo, a youth leader in the region, verified the occurrence to the publication, saying the bandits entered on motorbikes with sophisticated weapons and began firing intermittently.

“More than 40 people were killed while many injured. Residents of the village have fled to neighbouring communities for cover. As of yesterday, security personnel had not yet arrived at the community. It was deadly,” Sambo said.

Security officials have yet to remark on the tragedy.

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command reported that its operatives successfully thwarted a kidnapping attempt on Sunday and rescued the victims in the Dawaki area of Abuja.

SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, conveyed this information in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.

Adeh explained that the kidnapping attempt was disrupted due to an immediate and well-coordinated response to a distress call concerning the attack by unidentified gunmen in Dawaki on May 19.

She further noted that Commissioner of Police CP Benneth Igweh, overseeing the FCT, led the team of operatives who promptly mobilized to the scene to foil the kidnapping attempt.

”Displaying remarkable bravery and coordination, the police, in synergy with local hunters, advanced on the assailants and tactically ambushed them at Ushafa Hill via Bwari and Shishipe Hills via Mpape.

”This led to a fierce gun duel where the hoodlums were overwhelmed by the firepower of the operatives, and this forced them to scamper to safety with various degrees of bullet injuries and the victims were rescued,” she said.

She added that one of the rescued victims was currently in the hospital receiving medical attention.

The spokesperson of the FCT police command said that the CP had reaffirmed the command’s steadfast dedication to maintaining peace and security in the FCT.

She also said that search operations were ongoing to rescue other hostages who fled the scene during the shootout.
