The death toll in the Jukskei drowning has climbed to nine after seven more bodies were found on Sunday morning during the search for members who were swept away during baptism in Jukskei river.
Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that emergency services managed to recover seven more bodies on Sunday morning.
They were found between the Corlett and Grayston Drive areas.
Members of the EMS will be continuing their search throughout the day.
Teams working on the search consist of among others, the City of Johannesburg EMS, Gauteng EMS and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Mulaudzi stated that Johannesburg has received a lot of rain, causing most of the rivers to overflow.
While Mulaudzi did not discourage congregants from performing these rituals, he did caution them.
Bodies have been discovered in locations other than the stream where they went missing, which is thought to be due to the strong current.
Mulaudzi stated that EMS's public education efforts needed to be stepped up.
He stated that residents will be seeing them a lot more as they educate them on emergencies.
