On Tuesday, Justice Mu'azu Abubakar of the Bauchi State High Court sentenced Sa'idu Mohammed, 39, to 14 years in jail for sodomising a 12-year-old child.

However, Justice Abubakar provided the guilty the option of paying a N100,000 fine. The defendant had already begged the judge to balance justice with mercy.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, S.M. Toro, told the court that on June 16, 2022, the prisoner brought the victim to a river in the Yelwa village and sodomised him.

The offence, he added, violated Section 10 and is punishable under Section 11 of Bauchi State's anti-kidnapping, livestock theft, and rape Special Provision Laws (B.S.L.N. No. 8 of 2007).

In a related report, three men were placed under remand on Wednesday by a Kano Chief Magistrates' Court after they were accused of sodomising eleven minor boys.

Three Jakara Quarters residents in Kano, Uzaifa Rabiu, Aminu Ahmed, and Mohammed Bello, were accused of committing an "unnatural" offence by the police.

The defendants committed the crime at Jakara Quarters in Kano between October 2023 and February 2024, the prosecutor, Amina Baba, said to the court.

Baba said that the defendants tricked and enticed the eleven victims to their homes in Kano's Jakara Quarters, where they sexually assaulted them. She stated that the offence violated Section 284 of the Penal Code.

The defendants pled not guilty to the charge, and Dalhatu Usman, the defence counsel, sought the court to give his clients bail under Sections 35 and 36 (5) of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution, as amended.

However, the prosecutor opposed the bail application, stating that the defendant's allegations were significant and urging the court to dismiss the motion.

Chief Magistrate Auwal Yusuf-Suleiman ruled that the defendants be held in a detention facility and adjourned the hearing until March 28 to rule on the bail motion.
