Biden Administration To Send 1,500 Soldiers To US-Mexico Border

The United States is set to deploy an additional 1,500 troops to the US-Mexico border in anticipation of a surge in migration once pandemic-era restrictions are lifted.

The troops will be deployed for 90 days and will perform non-law enforcement duties such as data entry and warehouse support.

The move is in response to concerns about the end of the Title 42 restriction, which has allowed US authorities to turn away most asylum seekers without assessing their claims.

The additional deployment will bring the total number of troops on the border to about 4,000.

The Biden administration has faced criticism for continuing restrictive immigration policies and enacting further restrictions on asylum during his presidency.

The decision to deploy additional troops has been criticised by some, who say it sends a message of militarising the border to deter migrants.

However, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said that Mexico respects the US’ decisions.
