The Governor of Sokoto State and chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF), Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has visited the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Enahire.

Tambuwal's visit highlighted the need to address brain drain in the country.

The governor said the NGF was disturbed by how doctors leave the country for greener pastures in other countries.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the special adviser to Tambuwal on Media and Publicity, Muhammad Bello.

“We are witnessing brain drain over the years. It is alarming.

"And, I believe it has something to do with the welfare of the medical personnel.

“I urge the Federal Government to do something about this urgently", Tambuwal said.

He further urged the federal to ensure universal healthcare coverage for all Nigerians, under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF).

He added that the forum remains committed to building a strong healthcare delivery that is committed to the total eradication of polio in the country alongside other partners.

“There are challenges, but a lot has been achieved, particularly in the effort to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, which made Nigeria to come fourth, out of 54 African countries, under the Global Health Security Index for 2021."

Meanwhile, the health minister, Ehanire noted that 3000 medical doctors were being produced yearly in the country.

He added that 1,000 out of the 3,000 leave the country every year.

“Out of the medical doctors, those who are less likely to stay back in the country, and for whom the incentive to do so is abysmal, are experienced consultants.

“They are the ones we are more worried about because it takes a lot of money to train them, and it is difficult to meet their expectations," he stated.
