Leaders and representatives from 12 South American countries convened in Brasilia, Brazil, for a summit aimed at reviving regional integration.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva spearheaded the meeting with the goal of fostering greater cooperation and unity among South American nations.

Lula emphasized the need to overcome ideological divisions and restore dialogue and cooperation mechanisms that were abandoned in the past, leading to lost opportunities for integration.

The summit reflects a notable shift in the political climate of South America, as leftist political forces experience a resurgence following years of conservative rule.

The previous regional bloc known as the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) had been dormant for nine years, eventually fracturing due to the region's rightward shift.
