In a viral video now circulating online, Nigerian Soldiers were seen dehumanising and brutalising Okere community residents for protesting Olu of Warri’s attempt to perform a traditional rite and desecrate a shrine by pouring anointing oil on the shrine.

In the video, one of the residents was seen being beaten by the soldiers who used sticks and metal strings to hit him while he was asked to keep running.

Allnews.ng had reported that the long-running feud between Warri's Olu, Ogiame Atuwatse III, and Chief Ayiri Emami, a business magnate and All Progressives Congress (APC) figure in Delta State, has escalated into violence.

The feud, which began when the monarch was crowned and Emami was deposed as the Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom, has splintered the kingdom, particularly in the Okere community, Warri South local government district.

Last Saturday, the monarch attempted to visit the Okere community, which is believed to be Emami's support base but was met with resistance from the youngsters, resulting in two people being shot by troops from the 3 Battalion, Nigerian Army, Effurun, Delta State.

According to sources, a group of Okere teenagers objected to the monarch executing a customary rite and desecrating the shrine by pouring anointing oil as a libation on the ancient woodland that houses an ancestral shrine.

Aside from the two victims, Macaulay Uku and Daniel Grey, numerous people injured in the shooting were claimed to be Chief Emami's followers.

While one source stated the victims died from injuries incurred during the confrontation with the army, another claimed they were shot at close range.

“Some youths had stopped the monarch from entering the community to perform the rite prompting the deployment of soldiers to the area.

“Their main grouse was that the monarch was planning to pour anointing oil on the shrine against the established customary rite that the people were used to,” he said.
