The Chinese government was furious after U.S. President Joe Biden pledged support for Taiwan in case of an invasion by China.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told the press in Beijing on Monday that; “The remarks are a serious violation of the "One China Principle" and the commitments the U.S. has made to Beijing.”
She said the US side was sending "the completely wrong signal" to the independence forces in Taiwan, adding that "China is firmly against it."
Mao added; “China was strongly dissatisfied and resolutely opposed to Biden's comments and had lodged a formal complaint over it.”
Biden had assured Taiwan of military support, including U.S. troops, in the event of an attack.
Asked in a CBS 60 Minutes interview broadcast whether U.S. forces would defend the democratically governed island claimed by China, he replied: "Yes, if in fact, there was an unprecedented attack."
Taiwan's foreign ministry, on the other hand, expressed his appreciation to Biden for his reaffirming the "U.S. government's rock-solid security commitment to Taiwan."
