The gubernatorial candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Cross River, Amb. Wilfred Bonse, promised to provide 18,000 scholarships to tertiary institution students in the state.

Bonse, during a news conference held in Calabar on Monday, ahead of the March 18 governorship and House of assembly elections in the State.

He revealed that his team had established an extensive international partnership network and a robust scholarship program for deserving students in the state.

According to the governorship candidates, the scholarship would be distributed evenly across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state, with 1,000 students per local government benefiting.

He emphasized that the scholarship program would be accessible to all tertiary institution students in the state without discrimination, stating that he is an advocate of good and qualitative education.

He added that he would ensure that students receive the necessary support to ease their educational experience.

“The only way to attain advancement for the state and the country at large is through education, especially science and technology.

“The destination University is Weldios University in Benin Republic where scholarship arrangements have been perfected for 18,000 students from the State.

“The programme has being fully paid for and no money needs to be paid by the parents or guardians of these deserving students.

“It is verifiable. It is authentic and not a campaign stint. Otherwise, we would have talked about 100, 200 or 300 persons,“ he said.

Bonse explained that when qualified students gain admission, his campaign organisation would synchronise and provide stipends to sponsor their schooling.

“This is our little token towards unburdening the educational institutions which are already grappling with poor infrastructure for sound and qualitative education in the State,“ he said.

The NNPP candidate added; “We also have the issue of strikes which we unfortunately can do nothing about from outside, we will make sure we deal with the root causes holistically if given a chance to govern the State.”

According to Bonse, secondary schools in the state will receive more emphasis on teaching science and technical subjects, which will enable more students to qualify for science-related courses in foreign universities.

He assured the public that his administration, if elected as governor, would prioritize improving the standard of education at all levels.

Bonsee visited the Sarkin Hausawa da Fulani Palace, where he addressed the Hausa community in the Bogobiri area of Calabar.
