Are you planning on moving to Canada? If yes, there are a few things you’ll want to prepare yourself for.

Before taking your move, you have to consider the different currency, taxation, immigration process and overall cultural differences that come with relocating.

Canada offers various opportunities for individuals looking to live in the country and it provides experiences like other top nations too.

As you prepare to go to Canada, it’s important to know that things will be done differently than how it's done here.

Here are the things you should know about moving to Canada:

1. Weather

Living in Canada will make you experience one of the biggest cold weather as cold, snowy winters and hot summers, with short transitional seasons being one of the things you'll face in the country.

It’s difficult to describe how cold -25°C can feel, so come prepared with the right clothes.

2. Job hunt

Looking for and applying for jobs in Canada can be a lengthy process. This is also as it occurs in other countries, even where you come from.

Having job experience may help your quest of securing better jobs in fast processes. So get to work now, and put your CV together.

3. Cost of living

Depending on where you stay, the cost of living varies. It might be relatively high and it might be low too.

But always try to know the basic cost of living in your adopted city before you move. Places like Toronto and Vancouver are relatively expensive.

Montreal and some others have low property values and low rent but also lower salaries.

4. Arrive with funds

Getting a professional job can take months before landing one, so you should plan accordingly with your funds and how to spend them.

This means you have to bring enough funds to cater for your well-being and be prepared to take on a non-career job in the short term, as you are also on the lookout for a big job.

5. Canada and Immigrants

In November 2020, the Immigration, Refugee Council Canada (IRCC) announced its immigration plan for the next three years.

By the end of 2024, the Canadian government plans to welcome over 1.2 million immigrants to the country as permanent residents.

The main reason is to welcome skilled and semi-skilled foreign workers to apply for permanent residency in Canada.

6. Multicultural Country

Canada is one of those nations that encourage immigration. A major attraction for many immigrants is the equity with which people are treated in Canada.

Regardless of your race, gender, or sexual orientation, in Canada, you have the freedom to simply be what you want to be around people who accept you for who you are.

7. Work Permit

If you are moving to Canada, and you want to work in Canada, you will absolutely need a temporary foreign work permit.

You are required to obtain a temporary foreign work permit (TFWP) before you can legally start working in Canada.

If you are caught working without it, you could be deported and any chance of becoming a permanent resident will be gone.

8. Healthcare

The healthcare system in Canada is known for its excellence.

The system is mostly free at the point of use and is administered by the provinces. A health card is issued by the Provincial Ministry of Health to each individual who enrols for the program, and everyone receives the same level of care.

9. Taxation

Under Canada’s decentralised federal system, taxes are levied at multiple levels. Income taxes are collected by both the federal and provincial governments.

Depending on your status and terms of employment, you may be entitled to a tax refund at the end of the fiscal year.

10. Driving licenses

Driving licenses are awarded by the provinces, and individual provinces have their own rules and testing procedures.

Take a look at the rules for international licence-holders in your chosen province and ensure you know the right documentation before you leave for Canada.
