According to a military source, drone attacks of unknown origin targeted an air base in eastern Libya where mercenaries from the Russian paramilitary group Wagner are thought to be stationed on Thursday night.

Unknown drones "struck the al-Kharrouba air base, located 150 km south-east of Benghazi (east), where elements of the Wagner group are believed to be based," the source, who asked to remain anonymous, told AFP.

"There were no casualties," the source states further.

Since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011, Libya has been engulfed in a serious political crisis that has been weakened by tensions between the East and West and outside interference.

In his failed attempt to seize Tripoli from April 2019 to June 2020, Khalifa Haftar, the strongman of eastern Libya, employed fighters from Chad, Sudan, Nigeria, and Syria, but above all, mercenaries from Wagner.

Following the departure of some of their troops to fight alongside the Russian army in Mali or Ukraine, hundreds of Wagner members have continued to be active in the east, near the oil terminals, and the south of Libya.
