Quite a number of technology trends took centre stage in 2022.

While all the trends are highly acknowledged, however, in no favoured order, below is a rundown of seven of them that changed the game.

Metaverse

According to chathamhouse.org, “The metaverse is a vision of how the next generation of the internet will operate.

"A metaverse will be an improved digital environment where it is possible to move seamlessly between work, play, shopping, socializing and creativity in one digital landscape.”

Metaverse is arguably the convergence point for all the other technologies discussed below.

However, pundits are already postulating on the form this digital landscape is going to take ultimately.

Most of the big-tech players are already throwing their weights around in the hope of clinching a metaverse monopoly.

This is why, for example, firms like Meta (Facebook) have been investing massively in an immersive experience.

It is such that users using wearable hardware are able to discard reality for a virtual world in a true sense.

5G

5G is the acronym that represents 5th-generation mobile networks.

This is the new global wireless standard coming on the heels of 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.

The design concept behind the 5G technology is to enable a new kind of network (hopefully the metaverse) that should be able to connect virtually all people and all things together (e.g., humans can be connected with fellow humans, with animals and pets they own, and even with devices, machines, and objects they own).

For the 5G technology (especially the wireless space) to be able to accomplish this, its features must boast of higher multi-Gbps peak data speeds, massive network capacity, increased availability, ultra-low latency, more reliability, and a more natural user experience.

AI

Since the makeup of humankind is such that repetitive processes and tasks are herculean and the results’ integrity likely compromised, an adaptation of human intelligence can be used to train microprocessors to replicate human results.

This is the bedrock of AI.

We can therefore define artificial intelligence as the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.

Generally speaking, AI systems literally work by consuming and storing mega training data, analyzing and synthesizing these data to re-enforce correlations and pattern recognitions.

AI systems proceed to use these patterns for future predictions and pairing of potential states.

This way, AI can use a chatbot of sample text chats and thereby learn to reproduce lifelike exchanges with people.

CGI

Another round of stunning technology that made great news in 2022 was CBI (Computer-Generated Imagery).

The CGI can use computer software to create still or animated visual content. 3D imaging or 3D Rendering is another way of representing CGI.

For this reason, CGI can typically symbolize 3D computer graphics for creating characters and scenes as well as special effects in movies, television, and games.

CGI technology can also be used in advertising, architecture, engineering, virtual reality, and even art.

Whereas in traditional photography, either film or a digital camera captures an image, however, under the CGI, computer software is used to create computer-generated images.

XR

Another 2022 acronym buzz is XR. It refers to extended reality, which is a broad terminology for such technologies that attempt to alter reality.

XR does this through the addition of digital elements to the physical or real-world environment to such an extent that includes but is not limited to virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and augmented reality (AR).

Note, however, that the word ‘extended’ (represented by X) in XR suggests future inclusions of all variations that aptly capture the notion of extended reality.

For this reason, any new technology blending the physical and virtual worlds together will also be categorized as XR.

This is how we arrive at the terms AR, MR, VR, etc.
