Ganduje Pardons 12 Death Row Inmates

Kano Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has pardoned 12 inmates on death row and commuted death sentences of six inmates to life imprisonment.

This is contained in a statement by Kano command of the Nigeria Correctional facility spokesman, CC Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nassarawa Kano Command.

The statement added that Ganduje also pardoned four female inmates with long-term sentences based on good behaviour as recommended by the Correctional Authority. 

Some of the pardoned inmates have spent 25 years awaiting execution.

In his speech, the Chairman of the prerogative of Mercy, Abdullahi Garba Rano thanked Ganduje for using the power conferred on him by the constitution to release the inmates with good behaviour at the recommendation of the advisory council of prerogative of mercy.

The governor also gave 5,000 tansport fare to each of the released inmates to enable them reunite with their families.

The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Sulaiman Mohd Inuwa also thanked the governor for decongesting the custodial centre.

He called on the released inmates to be good ambassadors of the Nigerian Correctional Service and to stay away from any act that could lead them back to crime.
