Kano State government has said stringent measures would be put in place to ensure proper handling of gas, as it has already drafted a bill to check the rampant sale of gas in nooks and crannies of Kano.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Kabiru Getso, disclosed this on Sunday in an interview with newsmen, adding that as an emergency response to the deadly gas explosions recently in the state, the government had set up a high-powered committee to check the situation.

“Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment will strengthen surveillance to check and enlighten the public on safety measures in handling gas and other chemicals.

“We will embark on a massive public enlightenment on the media and in areas where gas is being handled.”

According to him, the state currently has no regulation or any law guiding the use of liquid wastes, air quality and Green House gas emissions.

“But in this regard, the Ganduje administration has drafted a bill to curtail the above issues and it’s currently being vetted at the state Ministry of Justice.”

According to NAN, the commissioner further explained that the state policy on the environment had been put into effect and would give direction to the state's environment sector.

This resolve by the government comes after two deadly gas explosions between May and June in the state, as well as a poisonous gas emission suspected to be from an expired gas cylinder that hospitalized many and killed others.
