The Genesis X convertible, the third and last electric vehicle concept of the brand's EV future, was unveiled by Hyundai's premium affiliate Genesis on Tuesday evening.

The unveiling, which took place at a flashy event before the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2022, follows the X Concept and the X Speedium Coupe, which are all part of the Inspired by X portfolio.

There were very few if any, specifics discussed at the event; they are all simply ideas. The Genesis X convertible and its concept siblings, however, go beyond simple design experiments.

The goal is to highlight the company's new EV lineup through the automobiles and in particular the front fascia of the Genesis X convertible.

The chief creative officer of the Hyundai Motor Group and the Genesis motor brand, Luc Donckerwolke, declined when asked if the X Convertible or something similar may soon be in consumers' garages. "Let me put it like this. I'm investing a lot of my own efforts to make it happen, he said.

To provide an airy and spacious atmosphere for four passengers when the top is down, the X Convertible's hardtop roof includes translucent moonroofs.

The new EV face from Genesis, which is a stylized version of the Genesis Crest Grille, is applied to the front of the car. Future EVs should feature this new "face."

According to the release, the concept's white paint is dubbed Crane White and contains pearl particles. The cockpit is driver-oriented, and the interior is Giwa blue with Dancheong Orange embroidery.

The X Convertible is referred to by Genesis as "a lighthouse for the brand." And judging by the response, it might have that chance. At a multimillion-dollar beach house in Malibu, California, when the vehicle was shown to select media and guests, the audience loudly gasped, which is unusual at events of this nature.

“We have to utilise this opportunity to inject more adrenaline in the brand,” Donckerwolke said. “If somebody believes that electric vehicles cannot be sexy, Genesis will demonstrate the exact opposite.”

The X Convertible combines its architecture and electric drivetrain with the X Concept and X Speedium Coupe concepts, both of which were unveiled in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Donckerwolke refused to vouch for the foundations of these ideas. He did confirm that: “We are working with the right partners to get the right amount of performance, which will be in my opinion adequate performance to fit this segment.”

He continued to say that the X Convertible will “open up a new, uh, let’s say the base of the platform, a new platform and modular system.” Donckerwolke declined to elaborate.

Genesis continues to push the design forward, as Donckerwolke mentioned, “Normally you go to you create something and you have to limit your design to the most common denominator,” he said.

“We don’t have this, we, we talk to our internal suppliers and we say, we need those seats. We need those lights. And this is, this is basically allowing us to push the boundaries a lot. And that’s basically what’s allowing us to create cars like this.”

Genesis said it aims to “deliver products for customers to enjoy,” and given the response of the gathered attendees, the Convertible X Concept moves the brand in that direction.
