Instagram To Offer Support For Leaner, Taller 9:16 Photographs To Match Its Full Screen

Instagram has announced that the company still intends to prioritise full-screen content despite having put a stop to its contentious revamp.

Instagram's CEO Adam Mosseri stated during his weekly Ask Me Anything session on Friday that the company will start experimenting with 9:16 photographs that are extremely tall "in a week or two."

“You can have tall videos, but you cannot have tall photos on Instagram,” Mosseri said.

“So we thought maybe we should make sure that we treat both equally.”

When displaying vertical photographs that have been cropped appropriately, Instagram currently reaches its maximum aspect ratio around 4:5.

To help them fit the entire screen as users navigate through the app's feed, support for leaner, taller 9:16 photographs will be added.

Some photographers criticised Instagram's TikTok-inspired redesign because it made all photos awkwardly display in a 9:16 frame.

To make the text easier to read, the new feed also added overlay gradients to the bottom of posts.

However, that was at odds with how photographers' work had originally appeared.

Mosseri acknowledged more than once that the full-screen experience was less than optimal for photographs during Instagram's shaky overhaul test with users.

Now, it's clear that Instagram still wishes to highlight that ultra-tall photo experience, but not by requiring it everywhere.

According to data collected by the firm, some users of Instagram started using the app less frequently after the redesign because they found it to be so unpleasant.

In an interview last week, Mosseri said, "I think that we need to take a major step back, reassess, and figure out how we want to move ahead."

Instagram has also stated that it will lessen the number of recommendations provided to users until it improves its ability to choose the content they will truly find enjoyable.
