The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has budgeted $25 million to counter terrorism in Nigeria, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso in 2024.

Prof. Fatou Sarr, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, announced this during a news conference at the commission's headquarters on Friday in Abuja.

She stated that four million dollars of the funds were set aside for humanitarian efforts to minimise the destructive effects of terrorism and natural catastrophes in the subregion.

Sarr went on to say that humanitarian efforts are critical in light of the community's numerous problems and displacements.

She said, “In 2024, ECOWAS has released 9 million dollars for internally displaced people, refugees, asylum seekers, as well as for the communities that welcome them (i.e. all 15 countries).

“ECOWAS has allocated one million dollars for stabilization in Nigeria, that is, victims of terrorism, displaced people, injured people, rehabilitation and strengthening community resilience.

“Out of a fund of 25 million dollars intended for the fight against terrorism in Nigeria, Burkina, Mali and Niger, ECOWAS has reserved 4 million dollars for humanitarian actions.”

She disclosed that in 2024 alone, ECOWAS would deliver approximately $12.6 million in aid to four million of the 8.5 million victims of violent wars and catastrophes in West Africa.

She stated that while under sanctions in January, the Republic of Guinea got 600,000 dollars, 100,000 of which was given to the fire tragedy and 499,390 for the country's floods.

Sarr added that the commission also implemented initiatives for the development and promotion of young people in the subregion through three primary intervention areas: volunteering, sports, and economic integration.
