Kano Police raids alleged illegal forex hawkers, 17 arrested

The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the Department of State Service, DSS, has arrested 17 suspected forex hawkers for illegal operation of Bureau De Change.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the raid took place on May 7, 2024, at Wappa Bureau De Change in Fagge Local Government Area, Kano.

"In a continued effort to stabilize the foreign exchange market in the country, the Kano Police Command conducted another raid on locations suspected of illegal forex transactions.

“The operation, led by the Kano Police Command in collaboration with the Department of State Services, DSS, targeted Wappa Bureau De Change in Fagge LGA. A total of 29 people were apprehended, but 12 were released due to insufficient evidence,” the statement reads.


The remaining 17 suspects were allegedly found with incriminating evidence, including, 68,000 CFA, Central African franc, 30 Indian rupees.

According to the Kano Police Command, further investigation revealed these individuals operated under an "Association of unlicensed Bureau De Change." 

He noted that they will be charged in court for their alleged offenses.

The statement added that the commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, commended the officers involved and reiterated the force's commitment to tackling illegal financial activities. 

"This arrest sends a message that such practices will not be tolerated, those engaging in them will face the full wrath of the law,”he said.


Commissioner Gumel further urged all individuals and businesses within the financial sector to operate legally and obtain the necessary licenses.

The statement urged individuals and business operators in the financial sector to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command's various communication channels.
