A group of Kengan men led by comedian Eric Omondi protested the high cost of living outside of Parliament on Tuesday, February 21, 2023.

According to official statistics, the inflation rate stood at 8.9% in January.

They chanted slogans while holding placards that read 'excessive cost of electricity and cooking oil,' among other things.

Local media revealed that the demonstrators wanted an audience with the Speaker of the National Assembly.

Indeed, they allegedly claimed that the Assembly duped the nation by proposing and enacting a bill that resulted in increased revenue.

The group, however, was not given an audience.

To disperse the shirtless demonstrators, police used tear gas.

Several demonstrators, including Omondi, are said to have been arrested.

The attempted forcible entry was motivated by the speaker's refusal to grant the group audience from within the Parliamentary boundaries.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics disclosed that the inflation rate in January was 8.9%.
