The Lagos State Government, Monday destroyed 1,500 seized motorcycles in compliance with the ban on commercial motorcycle operations in the 10 Local Government Areas (LGs) and 15 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) within the state metropolis.

Also, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi warned that violators risk three-year imprisonment upon apprehension and prosecution in line with the Transport Reform Law (TSRL) of 2018.

He said the action was taken to send a strong message to operators, riders, and passengers of commercial motorcycles (Okada) to refrain from entering the banned areas.

In his words, "The ban on Okada in specified regions is crucial for maintaining order, reducing risks associated with unauthorised motorcycle operation and also improving security".

For the avoidance of doubt, the prohibited Local Government Areas include; Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Mushin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere and Eti-Osa.

The Local Council Development Areas under them which the ban also covers include; Ojodu, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island East, Yaba and Coker Aguda, with others at; Itire-Ikate, Eti-Osa West, Iru Victoria Island, Ikoyi-Obalende, Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu, Isolo, Ejigbo, Bariga and Odi-Olowo.

The Transportation Commissioner urged motorcycle operators to comply with the ban order in the restricted areas.

He emphasised that commercial motorcycles (Okada) are not considered a safe mode of transportation and do not align with the transport policy of the State.
