The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has decided against going on strike before the November 6 deadline after the Lagos State government intervened.

NUPENG Chairman in Lagos, Tayo Aboyeji told NAN on Tuesday that the state government's intervention prevented the union's planned walkout.

Aboyeji said that the state government had ordered local youths working under the Indigenous Unity Forum not to bother tanker drivers on the Lekki Free Trade Zone Road in the Eleko Ibeju-Lekki area of the state.

According to NAN, NUPENG threatened to terminate the employment of its members who work as Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) in Lagos State on October 31 as a result of harassment and threats against their life from some hoodlums on the road.

The union observed in a letter to Babajide Sanwo-OIu, the governor of Lagos State, that all attempts to fend off the thugs had been met with resolute resistance.

The union claims that this has persisted unabatedly and led to attack, causing physical harm to union members as well as damage to their trucks.

According to Aboyeji, union members have begun operations in the axis while waiting for the problems to be resolved.

“For now, we are still watching the activities in that area and we hope the state government will put an end to the harassment.

“Our ultimatum to embark on strike from November 6 at midnight has expired due to the intervention of the state government,” he said.

The NUPENG helmsman claimed that a letter was sent to the governor outlining the union's concerns over the intimidation of its members by teenagers in the neighbourhood.

Aboyeji claimed that the group's illegal inclinations included mimicking, forging, and using the official NUPENG/PTD symbol and identification cards.

“The group extorts money from members, assaults and threatens anyone that questions or resists them or the source of their authority to perpetrate these criminal and illegal activities along the Lekki Free Trade Zone Road, Eleko Ibeju-Lekki.

“The union has written to several authorities including security agencies, but this group appears to be operating above the laws of the state and the country,” he said.

In order to safeguard his members' lives and property, he pleaded with the state administration to resolve the conflict and bring the road back to normal.
