On Tuesday, 165 female illegal immigrants were deported to Nigeria by the Libyan Illegal Immigration Control Department.

Xinhua was informed by the department's spokesman Haitham Belgasem that more deportation flights would be scheduled in the future. "Some of them were arrested as they were begging on the streets and others were arrested during raids on criminal hideouts," he said.

According to the International Organization for Migration, 7,477 illegal immigrants have so far this year been saved and sent back to Libya.

Many immigrants, mostly Africans, opt to travel through Libya to reach the shores of Europe because of the unrest and insecurity that have engulfed the nation since the fall of late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.

During its (January–February 2023) data collection round, the Displacement Tracking Matrix programme of IOM Libya identified a total of 706,062 migrants from over 44 nationalities in the 100 Libyan municipalities.
