LIFE: Lawyer Turned Politician, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal

Popularly referred to as Aminu Tambuwal, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is a Nigerian who can be described as a born leader.

The fourth Republic Nigerian politician and trained lawyer was born on January 10, 1966, in Tambuwal Village, Sokoto State.

He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the incumbent governor of Sokoto State.

Education

Tambuwal obtained his first Leaving School Certificate from Tambuwal Primary School, Tambuwal, Sokoto State in 1979. He consequently attended Government Teachers’ College, Dogon-Daji where he obtained his Teachers’ Grade two Certificate in 1984.

He proceeded to study Law at Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto and graduated with an LLB (Hons) degree in 1991. He further obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LB) after the one-year mandatory legal studies at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1992.

The certified lawyer did not stop after his call to bar, but took various related courses in different countries including, Telecoms Regulatory Master Class, Bath UK (2004), Lawmaking for the Communications Sector, BMIT, Johannesburg, South Africa (2004), International Legislative Drafting, Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana (2005), and Influence and Negotiation, Stanford Graduate School of Business, California (2008) among others. 

Post Education

Tambuwal has over the years been relevant in the legal field. He has served in capacities including but not limited to the role of Public Relations Officer in the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) between 1996 and 1997, NBA Sokoto Branch's Secretary (1997-1998), and as the Assistant National Secretary of the NBA between 2000 and 2002.

He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Body of Benchers, American Bar Association, and International Bar Association.

Political Ambition

Aminu Tambuwal’s political career started in 1999-2000 in the course of his legal career when he worked as a Personal Assistant on Legislative Affairs to Senator Abdullahi Wali, the Senate Leader at the time.

He became active in politics after this and in 2003, he contested for a seat in the House of Representatives to represent the Kebbi/Tambuwal constituency under the All Nigeria Peoples’ Party (ANPP). He was elected and in 2004 became the Minority Leader of the House.

Speaker, House of Representatives

The political connoisseur remained in the House of Representatives till 2015 under different parties including the ANPP, PDP and APC. While in the House, he served in various capacities as Deputy Chief Whip (2007), Chairman, member, House Subcommittee on the Bill for an Act to Amend the Land Use Act; acting Chairman, House Committee on Power; member, House Ad hoc Committee on Constitution Review; and Vice-Chairman, Economic Committee ACP-EU (2009) among many others.

Tambuwal

In 2011, he emerged the Speaker of the House of Representatives through an open secret-ballot system under the PDP, defeating Mulikat Akande-Adeola. 

In October 2014, he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This defection led to the barring of Speaker Tambuwal from the House of Representatives by the Nigerian Police Force who claimed to have acted on an intelligence report. His aides were also withdrawn at the time.

Governor

As a member of the APC, Aminu Tambuwal contested for Governor of Sokoto State and won on April 11, 2015. He however defected from APC back to PDP on August 1, 2018. He was re-elected as Governor of Sokoto State after the Gubernatorial election held on March 9, 2019. He won against APC’s Ahmed Aliyu and other minority parties. He is the current Chairperson of the PDP’s Governors’ Forum.

Presidential Ambition

Governor Tambuwal declared his intention to run for Presidency in 2019. He alongside Atiku Abubakar, Bukola Saraki and Rabiu Kwankwaso among others contested in the primaries for the party's ticket. 

With his corruption-free political record and support from Governor Nyesom Wike, a strong member of the party, he was expected to emerge the party’s representative at the general election but surprisingly came second behind Atiku Abubakar who won the ticket.

The incumbent Governor of Sokoto has again mentioned that he is consulting on whether or not to contest for presidency in 2023 and would decide at the appropriate time.

Traditional Titles

In April 2014, the Sultan of Sokoto bestowed the traditional title of Matawallen Sokoto on Aminu Tambuwal. 

The ruler of the Tiv Nation, Tor Tiv also conferred the chieftaincy title Ikyar I Tiv on Tambuwal for his positive contributions in Benue State.

Personal Life

The erudite politician and legal practitioner married Hajia Mariya Aminu Waziri and Maryam Mairo Aminu Waziri and he is a father of six children.

He is a Muslim who believes that different religions can co-exist peacefully.

The 56-year-old governor is one of the richest politicians in the country with an estimated net worth of $1.5 million according to Forbes magazine.

Scandals

In 2013, the current governor of Sokoto State was entangled in a controversy over the 400 Toyota Camrys purchased for members of the House of Representatives.

However, seeing that the scandal was only a move to impeach him as Speaker, his loyalists in the House passed a vote of confidence in him.
