The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) has said the Primary Three Mathematics curriculum was designed to enable pupils to acquire the mathematical knowledge needed to be relevant in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) era.

Dr Aminu Saidu, Principal Research Officer, NERDC, made this know on Wednesday at the ongoing three-day material development workshop for primary schools one to three in Kano.

The workshop was put together by the Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) programme to assist Kaduna, Kano, and Jigawa States in developing materials to enhance learning outcomes in primary schools.

Saidu added that the curriculum also aimed at exposing children to understanding and applying mathematical skills and concepts in the transforming world of technology.

According to him, this will allow Nigerian children to leverage the myriad career opportunities provided by mathematics.

“It is also designed to prepare the pupils for further studies in mathematics and other related fields relevant to the changing times, to provide solutions to societal problems,” he said.

Abubakar Umar, Material Development Officer, PLANE Kano, said that mathematics revolved around problem solving in number series, operations, geometric measurement, data collection, and algebraic thinking.

He said PLANE aimed at preparing primary three mathematics books to boost learners’ understanding of mathematics, just as they improved on the skills acquired in primary 1 and primary 2.

Umar added that the pupils are expected to be able to count, write, and read up to 10,000 numbers,  add and subtract fractions, and identify place value and order.

“Primary 3 pupils are also expected to be able to understand multiplication rules and multiply numbers up to 12 multiplied by 12 and divide without reminder.

“They should also be able to find the perimeter, area, capacity, and weight of shapes, objects, and spaces, and identify unique properties of 2D and 3D shapes," he said.

PLANE is a seven-year United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office-funded programme, designed to drive inclusive education programmes in Nigeria, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports
