Niger: Teenager apprehended by police for robbing students

The Niger Police Command has detained a 19-year-old teenager suspected of robbing female students in Bosso Quarters, Minna.

Shawulu Dan-Mamman, the state's Commissioner of Police, stated this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Friday.

According to the commissioner, the suspect, who lives in the old Kwata neighbourhood of Bosso, Minna, was apprehended at 3 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, following a distress call regarding a robbery operation at a female hostel in Bosso.

He stated that when the police patrol team arrived at the location, the suspect hurriedly escaped and hid in the ceiling, where he was discovered and apprehended.

“On his arrest, the following exhibits were recovered from the suspect. One sharp knife, seven mobile phones allegedly robbed from the students, two power banks, two ear-pods and a bag.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a notorious armed robber, who was identified to have perpetrated a similar act at Bosso campus second gate around February this year, ” he said.

According to the CP, the suspect is now under investigation and will be transferred to SCID for further investigation and prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Niger State Police Command has apprehended three individuals suspected of engaging in thuggery and illegally possessing prohibited firearms.

Commissioner of Police Shawulu Dan-Mamman disclosed that the suspects were apprehended with dangerous weapons and a substance suspected to be Indian hemp in Maitumbi, Minna.

The arrests took place around 1 am on April 30 during a raid in the Corpers' lodge area.

He said: “When we received the distress call, our patrol team of Operation Flush with vigilante members, led by the DPO rushed to the area and successfully arrested the suspects.

“The suspects are known for thuggery and use of dangerous weapons to terrorise residents.”

Dan-Mamman added that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices at large.
