Nigeria becomes African country with highest number of students in US

Nigeria is the only African country spotted on the list of top ten countries with the highest number of students in the United States.

This was revealed through data from the new Open Doors Report, published by the Washington-based Institute of International Education (IIE) on Monday.

The report further disclosed that the number of Nigerians studying in the United States of America rose by 22.2 per cent within one year despite the foreign exchange situation.

It added that the enrolment of students from Nigeria increased from 14,438 in 2021/22 to 17,640 in the 2022/23 academic year.

According to the report, the US experienced a 12 per cent increase in the number of international students hosted this year, 1.06 million, compared to the previous academic year. 


Below is the full list of the top ten countries with the highest number of students in the United States:

1. China 27 per cent (289,526)
2. India 25 percent (268,928)
3. South Korea 4 per cent (43,847)
4. Canada 3 per cent (27,876)
5. Nigeria 2 per cent (17,640)
6. Brazil per cent
7. Saudi Arabia per cent
8. Taiwan per cent
9. Japan per cent
10. Vietnam 2 per cent
