A Beninese migrant aged 30 has been stabbed to death and five others wounded in an attack by a group of Tunisians in the central-eastern part of the country.
The spokesperson for the Sfax court made the announcement Monday, May 29, 2023.
Between May 22 and 23, seven Tunisians armed with knives and sabres attacked 19 migrants gathering in dwellings in El Haffare (Sfax area).
According to Faouzi Masmoudi, the Sfax tribunal's spokesperson, the five victims from Sub-Saharan Africa were admitted to the hospital and had just "mild injuries."
Three Tunisians, aged 17, 23, and 26, were detained, and a court investigation was launched, according to Masmoudi.
Non-governmental groups have condemned the crime, which is taking place in an environment where "uninterrupted speeches inciting hatred and racism against migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa" may be heard, according to the FTDES (Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights).
According to early investigation findings, recordings show seven men assaulting the refugees.
The inquiry should also investigate the motives of the assailants.
"Hate speech and intimidation against migrants (from sub-Saharan Africa) disseminated on social networks contribute to mobilization against the most vulnerable groups and fuel violent behaviour against them," 23 non-governmental organisations denounced.
