The Governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom in a bid to curb the unending attacks of herdsmen and other security situations in the state, has inaugurated the State Community Volunteer Guard.
Benue State has witnessed a series of attacks by men described by residents as herdsmen.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the IBB Square in Markurdi, the state capital on Thursday, Ortom said, the guards will carry lawful weapons.
The governor revealed that his government would apply for a license to acquire AK-47 rifles and explosives from the federal government while encouraging President Muhammadu Buhari to approve the licence.
Ortom said herdsmen bearing sophisticated weapons have killed over 5,000 people in Benue since 2011.
According to Ortom, the guards will work with the conventional security operatives in the state
The governor, however, warned the guards against acting in breach of the law, even as he emphasized that the guards are to complement the effort of the police, army and other security forces.
The volunteer guards were drawn from the 23 local governments of the state.
