Police apprehend cultist, gang leader terrorising Asaba, Anambra residents

An 18-year-old man, Anichede Akachukwu, AKA Star B, has been detained by police in Anambra State for allegedly being a notorious cultist and the leader of an armed robbery group.

According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, the suspect is well-known for carrying out robberies in Asaba, Delta State, and Ogbaru, Anambra.

He was claimed to have been arrested while receiving treatment for a gunshot wound sustained during an operation in which he engaged in a shootout with police officers.

Parts of the statement read: “We announce the arrest on 17/5/2024 of a notorious and most wanted cultist and armed robber in Uruagu village, Oba, Idemili South LGA.

“The suspect, Anichede Akachukwu ‘M’ 18 years A.K.A Star B is a confessed leader of Vikings Secret Cult Confraternity and armed gang terrorizing Ogbaru LGA and Asaba in Delta State.


“His arrest is following a tip-off of intelligence gathered as he was receiving treatment in their den from a bullet wound sustained in their encounter with police operatives in Asaba.

“The suspects have provided police with information on their mode of operations and names of other gang members which is already aiding the ongoing investigation.”

Ikenga stated that in a separate operation in Okija, Ihiala LGA, Command operatives discovered a white Porsche Cayenne Jeep bearing the registration number AGL 60 HJ Lagos, which he believes is a secessionist operational vehicle.

He said: “During a search of the vehicle, the operatives found a bag and discovered 27 pieces of live 7.62m ammunition, three live cartridges, one-touch light, charms, and other incriminating items

“The CP has charged operatives to sustain the tempo and direct continuous onslaught to weed out all the criminal elements and reduce crime to the barest minimum in the State.”


Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command has detained a police officer who was seen on camera beating up a tricycle operator with the nozzle and buttstock of his official AK-47 weapon.

There was an uproar over the incident and in response, the state police command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated in a press release that the individual had been identified and arrested for interrogation.

Ikenga said: “We wish to let the members of the public know that the police officer seen on a viral video assaulting a citizen has been identified.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, ordered immediate disciplinary proceedings to commence on the incident.

“The CP reiterated that the command under his watch would not tolerate any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel and emphasized the need for officers to be courageously calm when dealing with the civil populace, especially when being provoked.”


Ikenga also stated that the command was requesting that the victim shown in the video come forward to assist in the investigation into the attack.
