As the academic and non-academic staff of Ambrose Alli University(AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State continues to protest the non-payment of their salaries, the aggrieved workers on Wednesday dumped a coffin at the main gate of the institution along the Benin-Auchi road.
The protest began on Monday when the workers laid a siege at the university main gate, alleging the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Sonnie Adagbonyin of selective salary payment, maladministration, intimidation, and victimisation in the University.
The coffin dropped at the gate bore inscriptions including “Odiase, Adagbonyin, Osakue Must Go”, “SIT Stop Deceiving Edo Government and People”, “Enough of Impunity, Intimidation and Arbitrary Policies Decisions in AAU, Ekpoma,” “Save Workers Cooperative Societies Restore Check Offs,” and “Stop Slave Labour in AAU Ekpoma”
The protesters who sang solidarity songs criticised the Acting Registrar and a member of the Special Intervention Team(SIT), Austin Osakue for portraying the smooth operation of the university.
Prof. Eunice Omozejele, who spoke on behalf of the workers stated that the sad situation has led to the death of some staff who were unable to pay their medical bills.
Omozejele also doubted the academic qualifications of the SIT Head due to the insincerity in the payment of staff.
The Professor urged the team to be truthful in discharging their duties.
