Five school children were killed and several others injured in a ghastly road accident in Mitchells Plain, South Africa on Tuesday morning.
The children are reported to have been inside an SUV when it collided with a bus on AZ Berman Drive in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town.
According to a report from the SABC Western Cape, five children were killed in the collision near the Promenade Mall in Mitchell's Plain.
“A bus and an SUV collided at the intersection of AZ Berman Drive and Kerrem Street near Beacon Valley.
"The cause of the collision is unclear at this stage. Emergency personnel and police are on the scene", a report stated.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has offered his sympathies to the families of the children who died in the tragic event.
“Our City mourns together with the families of scholars who died in the fatal crash in Mitchells Plain this morning.
"This is a terrible, dark day in our City. As a parent, my heart breaks for those who will not see their children return home from school today.
"While it can never restore the lives so tragically taken, we trust that authorities will establish the full facts surrounding this incident so that there may be accountability for any wrongdoing", said Mayor Hill-Lewis.
He furthermore said the South African Police Services (SAPS) had secured the scene and would communicate official announcements on the incident.
