Two bystanders have died while two more, including a guard, have been injured after a cash-in-transit heist in Benoni, South Africa on Wednesday morning.

According to officials, the incident occurred around 8 a.m. on Putfontein Road when highly armed suspects assaulted a Fidelity cash van.

The incident and deaths were verified by Ekurhuleni metro police, Blue Hawk Tactical, and national police.

Ignatius Maphike, the spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni metro police department (EMPD), verified that different law enforcement agencies were on the scene.

"No SAPS or EMPD officers were injured in the collision, but one Fidelity security guard was injured on the arm." Two innocent witnesses were killed, and another was shot in the arm."

This was verified by national police spokesman Brig Athlenda Mathe, who stated that the highly armed group fired at passersby at random.

Mathe warned people to stay away from the road because it is "still an active crime scene."

"SAPS has dispatched a multidisciplinary team to search for the armed suspects, as well as its crime scene experts, including the bomb disposal unit," she said.

"Police have recovered three getaway vehicles, including a burned-out gold BMW sedan, a silver sedan, and a white Audi A1."

According to Maphike, all three cars were using forged license plates.
