Faith Nwonye, a 30-year-old teacher at Landmark School in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area, Anambra State, has been arrested for allegedly beating an eight-year-old student into a coma.

Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the Commissioner for Education, informed the media in her office on Monday that the school had been permanently closed by the state government.

Chuma-Udeh further said that she had summoned the school's owner and Nwonye to explain the situation that resulted in the brutalisation of the primary two students.

The commissioner indicated that the school was shuttered due to both the incident and its illegality.

She said, “We received this unfortunate incident from an illegal school in Mgbakwu that a child was beaten to a coma over the weekend.

“On behalf of the State Government, we invited the proprietress of the illegal school as well as the teacher who purportedly beat the child.

“We’ve handed the matter to the police for further investigations, as we await Mr Governor’s directives. Meanwhile, the school is closed down indefinitely because it’s not supposed to exist in the first instance.”

She conveyed her concern over the situation while lamenting that the victim, who is presently in hospital, has a 20% chance of life, according to the doctor.

"Beating a child is a crime, regardless of whether the school is authorised. According to the doctor, the child's odds of survival are 20%," she explained.

She further revealed that the teacher would be brought to book.

“As soon as the Police are done, the teacher will face other institutions against child rights. She’s going to have the full wrath of the law brought upon her over her actions.

“Anambra State abhors violence to children, women, and any other person. It’s not part of this administration and Mr Governor is against such.”

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old secondary school teacher, Ojo Ezekiel has been sentenced to life imprisonment for rape.

He was sentenced by Justice Abiodun Akinyemi of the Ogun State High Court sitting in Abeokuta after being convicted of raping a seven-year-old minor in Abeokuta.

Ojo Ezekiel, who was first arraigned on July 1, 2022, was convicted on a sole count of rape contrary to section 3 (1) and punishable under section 3 (2) of the violence against persons (prohibition) law of Ogun State 2017.

Ezekiel is said to be a teacher in the secondary school, which shares the same compound as the primary school that the seven-year-old attended.

The prosecuting counsel, Olusegun Olaotan, had told the court that while the victim’s mother was bathing her seven-year-old daughter, she observed that something was wrong with her private part.

The seven-year-old, however, after persistent questioning, revealed to her mother how she was sexually abused by the convict

Olaotan, in his final submission, said, “While giving her evidence in court, the second prosecution witness (PW2), who is the victim, said that the defendant used to pull aside her pant before inserting his finger into her vagina.

"Evidence of the third prosecution witness (PW3) (medical doctor) corroborates that of the second prosecution witness. She testified that in the course of examining the (PW2), she discovered that the hymen of the PW2 was not intact. it was opened by 2cm.”

He said that PW2 evidence is corroborative of the fact that she was sexually abused indeed, and the same was further corroborated by exhibits two and three as well as the evidence of (PW1), the mother of the child who noticed while bathing her that something was wrong with her private part.
