Teen remanded for defiling neighbour’s daughter in Ibadan

A Family Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan has ruled that Joshua Olayiwola, a teenager, be remanded in the Abolongo Correctional Facility in Oyo Town for allegedly defiling his neighbour's eight-year-old daughter.

The police accused Olayiwola of defilement and according to the News Agency of Nigeria, Magistrate S. Adesina, who did not hear Olayiwola's plea owing to a lack of jurisdiction, directed the police to submit the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

She postponed the issue until June 13, for consideration.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Gbemisola Adedeji, informed the court that Olayiwola allegedly defiled the juvenile on April 15 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. in Ibadan's Ojo Ekun neighbourhood. She stated the offence violated the requirements of Section 34 of the Oyo State Child Rights Law 2006.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Iyaganku Chief Magistrates' Court in Ibadan ruled that Dickson Peter, a 35-year-old man, be placed in a detention institution for allegedly setting fire to his landlord's residence.

NAN reports that authorities accused the suspect of two charges of felony and arson.

The Magistrate, M. Mudashiru, who did not hear his plea owing to a lack of jurisdiction, ordered that he be held in the Abolongo Correctional Facility in Oyo Town.

Mudashiru stated that the remand is pending legal opinion from the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP. He delayed the case until July 23, for mention.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Femi Oluwadare, informed the court that on April 18, at around 12:30 a.m., Peter was accused of unlawfully setting fire to his landlord's house, Cepas Okeme, and destroying belongings worth N6.5 million.

Oluwadare stated that after he set fire to the structure, it moved to the adjacent property owned by Bose Ali 'F', destroying items worth N3.5 million. He said the offence violated Section 443 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.
