Nigerian singer Tekno has revealed that his 2016 hit single ‘Pana’ was inspired by rapper Ycee’s song ‘Omo Alhaji’.

Recounting the story on the ‘Afrobeats Intelligence’ podcast with Joey Akan, he said that he was at the club and heard ‘Omo Alhaji’ playing.

According to him, he started yearning for a slow song that will also be a hit song just like Ycee’s ‘Omo Alhaji’.

“I was in the club, this was after ‘Duro’, ‘Wash’ and ‘Where’. I went in the club and they were playing ‘Omo Alhaji’.

“In my head, I’m like I want a slow song that is a big song.

"How dare you Ycee have a slow song that’s a big one and I don’t have one.

“Because I was making fast beats at this point. I’m like I want a slow song that is a banger,” Tekno said.

“Went to the house, tryna create and whatnot.

"One day I was going upstairs, Krizbeats was downstairs making beat for OG; ‘Pana’ beat.

“The progression is playing; it’s a progression I listened to a lot as a kid because my dad used to play a lot of old Osadebe type of music.

“Hearing the progression and the beat, I’m like this sound like something from my ancestors."

He said that he asked Krizbeats for the beat and OG said that beat was for him.

Tekno requested that he just freestyle on it, and OG agreed.

“15 minutes later, baby pana. OG came in the room and is like ‘Nah, take it.

"If the song is sounding like this, it’s already done we don’t need to remake it.”

Tekno said that he knew ‘Pana’ was a good song but didn’t have an idea that it would be as big as it got.
