Stroke, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, respiratory and heart diseases are commonly known diseases that can lead to death.

However, there are other things that seem less harmless but are potentially deadlier.

Below are a few of them.

Extension Cords

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, misused or damaged extension cords cause about 3,300 residential fires each year, killing 50 people and injuring 270 others.

Extension cords become problematic when they are misused or overloaded.

Therefore, it is advisable to use them on a temporary basis only, instead of filling them up with plugs at all times.

Air Conditioner

Air conditioners save us from the humidity and brutal summer heat, but according to a new study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, they could also kill.

The study reveals that increased use of air conditioning in buildings could actually contribute to global warming, which might lead to degrading air quality and worsening the toll of air pollution on human health.

In fact, researchers estimated that it could contribute to an additional 1,000 deaths per year.

Also, a leaking air-conditioning unit can lead to refrigerant poisoning.

In some instances, it can cause heart palpitations and seizures, cutting off oxygen to the lungs and cells, which is fatal.

Microwave

A microwave oven is very efficient at reheating food, retains essential nutrients and doesn't make food saggy.

However, while many food storages, preparation, and serving products are made from plastic, microwaving them can accelerate the release of harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates.

Therefore, unless the plastic product is deemed microwave safe, avoid microwaving it.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure also referred to as hypertension is a condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high.

High blood pressure can quietly damage the body for years before symptoms develop

Usually, hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90 and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to disability, poor quality of life, or even a deadly heart attack or stroke.

Salt

Consuming too much salt can put one at risk of stroke.

According to a study, high consumption of salt is responsible for 62 per cent of causes of strokes and 49 per cent of coronary heart disease, which is a leading cause of death in Nigeria.

Even though less salt means a lack of taste, it spells good health for the heart, lungs, kidneys and other major organs of the body.
