Nigeria is a nation that is rapidly developing. Both its population and economy are steadily expanding, and this trend is expected to continue.

The country boasts of one of the greatest proportionately young populations in the world, and its higher education market is booming.

Nigeria is home to around 130 institutions, 50 of which are privately owned, while some are controlled by the federal and state governments.

However,  just six universities from Nigeria are included in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. 

Below are the top 10 Universities in Nigeria according to information gathered by the Times Higher Education University ranking.

Our list will be in ascending to descending order. 

1. University of Ibadan 

Science, medicine, and the arts were the only three departments of the University of Ibadan when it first opened, but it has since grown to include 13 faculty, including those for the social sciences, agriculture and forestry, education, technology, law, and dentistry.

Making education accessible to everyone was the university's initial goal.

It has a reputable distance learning centre where students with familial or financial constraints can pursue their education.

In addition, the University of Ibadan has its own zoological and botanical gardens, which are home to a variety of endangered species of flora and animals. 

2. University of Lagos

Three campuses make up the University of Lagos, which was established in 1962 and is located in Lagos, the nation's commercial hub.

These include the College of Medicine in Idi-Araba, Surulere, the Main Campus at Akoka (which is largely encircled by the picturesque view of the Lagos lagoon), and the School of Radiography at Yaba.

Over 86 undergraduate and 140 graduate programs are available at the university, which has 12 colleges and 5 institutes.

Additionally, there are more than a hundred research groups and ten research centres, some of which are Centers of Excellence.

The institution conducts studies on a variety of topics, such as medication development, herbal medicine, economic policy analysis, autism, and neurodevelopmental problems. 

3. Covenant University 

The Living Faith Church Worldwide and the World Mission Agency founded Covenant University in 2002.

The private Pentecostal Christian university is located in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria. 

The institution is divided into four colleges: the College of Engineering, the College of Science and Technology, the College of Leadership and Development Studies, and the College of Business and Social Sciences.

A variety of degree programs and vocational courses are available at each college.

It was rated the best private institution in the nation in 2018 by the Nigerian Universities Commission.

4. University of Ilorin

The University of Ilorin was established in August 1975 and is more commonly referred to as UNILORIN.

It is located in Kwara State in Ilorin, Town. 

A Federal Government Military decree at the time led to the creation of UNILORIN.

One of the Third National Development Plan's educational mandates was to be implemented as a result of its establishment.

The plan aimed to increase chances for young Nigerians who desired to attend universities in the nation.

Additionally, this assisted in producing highly skilled labour, which benefited the economy.

According to JAMB results from 2021, UNILORIN was the year's top-ranked institution.

5. University of Nigeria, Nsukka 

The University of Nigeria, one of the top universities in the country.

In 1955, UNN was established as Nigeria's first fully indigenous and autonomous university, modelled after the American educational system.

The official opening date was October 7, 1960.

The University of Nigeria has four campuses overall and is situated in Nsukka, Enugu State.

The first three campuses are situated in Enugu State in Nsukka, Enugu, and Ituku-Ozalla.

Its final campus is at Aba, in the state of Abia. One of the few universities in Nigeria with up to 4 campuses.

The institution has 102 academic departments and 15 faculties.

It offers provides 211 postgraduate programs in addition to 108 undergraduate programs.

6. Obafemi Awolowo University

Although Obafemi Awolowo University was established in 1961, classes didn't start until October 1962.

The Federal Government owns the institution, which was originally known as the University of Ife.

Later, in 1987, it was renamed Obafemi Awolowo University, or OAU, in his honour.

OAU is considered Nigeria's top university and has produced numerous successful people in a variety of fields, including business, the arts, law, and politics.

7. Ahmadu Bello University


In Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello is also a Federal Government University.

Ahmadu Bello University, also known as ABU, was established as the University of Northern Nigeria on October 4, 1962.

The University maintains two campuses: the main campus is in Samaru, and the other is in Kongo, Zaria.

ABU also has a pre-degree institution at Funtua, which is only a few miles from Samaru, the main campus.

A wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs are available at Ahmadu Bello University.

Additionally, it provides vocational, remedial, and associate degree programs.

With its own ABU Teaching Hospital, one of the biggest teaching hospitals in Nigeria and Africa, it boasts a sizable medical program.

8. Federal University of Technology, Akure

Nigeria's top technology university is thought to be the Federal University of Akure.

It was established in 1981 and is frequently referred to as FUTA or FUTAkure.

The Nigerian government intended to develop institutions that focus on graduating students with both academic and practical knowledge of technologies, which is why FUTA was founded.

It is located in Akure, the administrative centre of Ondo State.

9. University of Benin

The University of Benin, also known as UNIBEN, is one of the best universities in the nation.

It is well known that the first female vice-Chancellor, Grace Alele-Williams was appointed at UNIBEN.

The university's current overall student population, which includes both full-time and part-time students, is over 40,000.

In the fields of agriculture, public health, and engineering, the University of Benin is well known for its partnerships with numerous universities around the globe as well as with national and international organizations like USAID, Ford Foundation, UNCF (United Negro College Fund), and RMRDC (Raw Materials Research & Development Council of Nigeria).


10. Federal University of Technology, Minna  

The Federal University of Technology, Minna has its roots in 1983, when the institution was founded to foster the urge for the country to be self-sufficient in science, engineering, and technology.

The previous Government Teachers' College Bosso's facilities, which are now the University's Bosso Campus, were purchased by the university when it was founded.

To prepare for the future expansion planned, the University also purchased 10,650 hectares of land in Gidan-Kwano along the Minna - Kataeregi - Bida Road as its permanent site.
