The continuous exit of Nigerian lecturers for greener pastures has been blamed by many on the poor funding of the lecturers by the government.
Prof. Charles Ayo, the Vice-Chancellor of Trinity University, Yaba, Lagos State on Tuesday bemoaned the emigration of the lecturers due to poor remuneration.
Speaking during an interview, Ayo urged both the federal and state governments to increase the allocation to the education sector to put an end to the exodus of the lecturers and the incessant strike actions by public tertiary institutions across the nation.
A former Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota also urged the government to ensure by all means that education is repositioned and the country is returned to its place in the global ranking.
He appealed to candidates contesting for the Presidential seat in 2023 to consider prioritising sufficient funding of education and improved allocation of budget to education.
“The country needs a government that will pay more attention to education because there cannot be any meaningful development without education.
“We want a government that will be able to end incessant strikes and pay attention to the education sector.
“It is education that will impact positively on transport, safety, health and even security,” the ex-VC said.
The university warned that lecturers and professionals would continue to seek fairer options if the education sector is not returned to its position.
