Police in Kampala have confirmed the arrest of 11 activists that were demonstrating against corruption and the iron sheets scandal involving top government officials.
The Torture Survivors Movement UG group planned the rally in downtown Kampala during a morning rain.
Protesters carried iron sheets asking that the government do justice to the vulnerable people of the Karamojong subregion, who were the intended recipients of the iron sheets scandalously shared by some government officials, including ministers.
Around noon on Tuesday, police used tear gas to disperse the protestors.
According to Patrick Onyango, a spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, this was a gang of rowdy adolescents who mobilized and staged a violent demonstration in the capital city.
According to police, the mob assaulted their officers, including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rutagira Musiimenta, who is in charge of the Mini Price police Post.
"Their protest is uncalled for because President Museveni handled the situation by ordering an investigation." According to Onyango.
The 11 suspects have been charged with unlawful assembly and instigating violence, according to police.
"They are being held at Kampala's Central Police Station.
"We urge members of the public who wish to protest to contact the Inspector General of Police," he stated.
